Growing a Sustainable Future in Parará Purú

At IME Marine Group, sustainability is more than an environmental commitment—it is a responsibility to support the people, communities, and ecosystems that help secure a better future for generations to come.

In celebration of World Environment Day and National Environment Day, a team of IME volunteers traveled to Parará Purú, an Emberá Wounaan community located within the Chagres watershed, to participate in a meaningful forest enrichment initiative aimed at strengthening both the local environment and community resilience.

Working alongside residents and environmental partners, volunteers planted a diverse selection of ornamental and fruit-bearing trees, including orange, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit, cinnamon, soursop, mamón, and coconut palms. These species were carefully chosen for their environmental and social value, helping to improve biodiversity, support sustainable tourism opportunities, and provide long-term benefits for local livelihoods.

The initiative was coordinated through Fundación Chagres, whose work continues to foster collaboration between communities, organizations, and environmental stakeholders dedicated to protecting one of Panama’s most important natural regions.

The visit to Parará Purú offered more than an opportunity to plant trees. It provided firsthand insight into a community whose way of life is deeply connected to the surrounding environment. From sustainable resource management practices to locally sourced food and a strong culture of environmental stewardship, the Emberá Wounaan community demonstrates how conservation and development can work hand in hand.

The community also carries a remarkable historical legacy. Parará Purú is home to descendants of Manuel Antonio Zarco, the renowned Emberá Wounaan chief who trained American astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo space programs in tropical survival techniques during the 1960s. His invaluable contributions were later recognized by NASA through the Silver Snoopy Award, underscoring the global significance of the region’s ancestral knowledge and cultural heritage.

Beyond the environmental impact of the tree-planting activities, the experience highlighted the importance of partnerships built on shared values and mutual respect. Protecting the Chagres watershed is vital for Panama’s future, as the Chagres River and its associated lakes provide drinking water to the vast majority of the country’s population. Preserving these ecosystems is therefore not only an environmental priority but also a social and economic necessity.
