The Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) was introduced in the 2009 Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.

All ships weighing over 500GT will be required to carry the Inventory of Hazardous Materials. As well, the European Union aiming to reduce negative impacts linked to the recycling of EU-flagged ships, adopted the Ship Recycling Regulation (SRR) - EU SRR 1257/2013 - requires, among other restrictions, an onboard list of Hazard Materials (IHM) for non-EU-flagged vessels, that calls a port or anchorage of an EU member state (starting 31 December 2020).

The purpose of an IHM survey is to provide ship owners, managing agents, crews, engineers, and workers with a management report of all the hazardous materials, which are on-board the vessel.

The main materials that the IHM survey covers are; Asbestos, PCBs, TBT’s, ODS, HBCDD’s, and PFOS. Other materials may be determined in the following part of the report (PBDE, PBB, Mercury & lead).

IHM is to be developed in compliance with relevant IMO guidelines while taking into account the specificities of the EU legislative context.
